NCBI Gene Info:This gene encodes a member of a protein family characterized by nine zinc finger motifs followed by a homeobox domain. In mammals, homologs of this gene have been implicated in neuroprotection through various processes that include chromatin remodeling, splicing, cytoskeletal reorganization, and autophagy. In addition, silencing of the mouse homologs of this gene in erythroleukemia cells results in defects in erythropoiesis. Morpholino knockdown of this gene or its paralog in zebrafish cause similar developmental delays, morphological abnormalities, fewer blood cells and defective hemoglobin production.
